Annotation | Negative attitudes surrounding older people and sexuality can result in the mistaken belief among older people themselves that sex stops at 60. The author reviews the literature. Although public stereotypes of ageing appear to be changing, they still affect how individuals perceive themselves as they grow older. Despite research which has adequately documented that sexual interest, desire and activity may well last into the later years, culturally derived stereotypes, stimulated by negative attitudes towards older people, contribute to the prevailing resistance of an acceptance of their sexuality.
