Annotation | The Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI), based on a standardised assessment tool, the Minimum Data Set (MDS), was probably the most important requirement of the US Nursing Home Reform Act 1987 (OBRA). The standardised data that the RAI makes available has the potential to revolutionise the way in which the quality of nursing home care is assessed, assured, and improved. This article outlines the role of government at federal and state levels, what the quality indicators are, and how they can be used in quality of care improvement initiatives. (RH). |
