AnnotationAfter three decades, the question of how to assure quality in long-term care in the US continues to be problematic. The need for regulation is examined from the point of view of a consumer advocacy group. Three articles demonstrate the positive effects of regulation on quality. The limits of regulation argument considers state policy in regulating assisted living, the views of families of dementia sufferers, and politics nationally, and at state and nursing home level. A final section addresses new approaches to quality assurance, including the use to which resident assessment data is put. (RH).
