Annotation | This paper, dated 29 April 1998, was prepared by the Special Interest Group in Health Promotion and Preventative Care and The Policy Committee of the British Geriatrics Society (BGS). It responds to the Government's Green Paper `Our Healthier Nation'. Although the BGS welcomes the consultation paper as a significant attempt by the Government to take an active approach to health, concern is expressed over the following issues: the omission of the older population from most of the target reductions in heart disease, stroke, cancer, and mental health; the generality of the statement that ageing is a fixed cause of poor health in older age; and that the paper will itself be seen, by omission, as denying older people fair access to effective preventive care strategies.
