The need for single registration care homes the RCN vision | Author(s) | Pauline Ford, Hazel Heath |

Annotation | The RCN (Royal College of Nursing) believes that the distinction between nursing and residential care homes should be removed, and that single registration care homes should be created, in which all people receive a nursing assessment undertaken by a skilled, expert nurse with the client group. The article suggests various categories of care for which care homes could elect and register to offer services, ranging from predominantly social care, through a mix of health and social care needs, to homes providing for complex health needs. Thus, single registration care homes would offer flexibility of services along a continuum of care, with greater choice for those needing long-term care, and would make best use of scarce resources of skilled nursing and social care professionals.
