AnnotationUser participation and consumerism have become increasingly important in the development of service provision for older people. This review focuses on three publications demonstrating ways in which older people have been able to influence the design and content of research. `Independence and involvement: older people speaking', by Stephen Abbott and Malcolm Fisk (Abbeyfield Society, 1997) was commissioned by Abbeyfield. It sought the views and feelings of people aged 85 and over about their preferences for living arrangements. `A meeting of minds: older people as research advisers', by Rosemary Tozer and Patricia Thornton (Social Policy Research Unit, University of York, 1995) - which discussed older people's experiences acting as an advisory group having a say in planning community care services - led to a seminar and a workshop discussing the theme further. Presentations at a conference `Putting older people in the picture', edited by Roger Sykes (Anchor Trust, 1997) have further confirmed older people's role in research which affects them. Some points for practice regarding listening to and involving older people in service provision are summarised. (RH).
