Establishing the limits of normal cerebral ageing and senile dementias | Author(s) | Karen Ritchie |
Journal title | The British Journal of Psychiatry, vol 153, August 1988 |
Pages | pp 97-101 |
Keywords | Mental ageing ; Dementia ; Literature reviews. |
Annotation | This editorial article considers cognitive change in older people from biological, neuropsychological and epidemiological viewpoints, to explain the relationship of senile dementia to normal ageing-related changes. Current research suggests that senile dementia is the result of interplay of genetically determined disease processes, ageing-related decline which may be regulated at the cellular level, and neuronal repair and compensation mechanisms. The author reviews evidence from the research literature. (RH). |
