AnnotationThe domiciliary care market was projected to be worth £5.9 billion at April 1997, comprising local authority expenditure on personal social services, National Health Service expenditure on community health care services, and the private purchase of domiciliary care services. 2.6 million homecare hours were purchased weekly by local authorities in 1997, 6% higher than in 1996, and 56% greater than in 1992 - a trend set to rise with more use of intensive homecare instead of residential care. This report examines and presents statistical information on various aspects of the UK homecare market: local authority purchase and provision of domiciliary care; private purchase of domiciliary and informal care; community health services; expenditure on community care and community health services; regulation, accreditation and quality of services; structure of the domiciliary care industry; consumers, carers and demand; sources of finance for domiciliary services; and prices, costs and profits.
