AnnotationThis volume includes further papers presented at three International Research Seminars on 'Issues in Social Security' held May 1984, June 1995 and May 1996 in Sigtuna, Sweden, and organised by FISS (the Foundation for International Studies on Social Security) in cooperation with the Swedish Federation for Social Security Offices (Försäkringskasseförbundet, FKF). The volume is divided into four parts. The first part deals with general welfare state issues and cross-cutting themes. Part 2 groups together papers on old age pension reforms in European Union member states, US, Japan, Spain, Singapore, and Latin America. Pay-as-you-go (PAYG) versus funded systems of financing pensions in Central and Eastern Europe are discussed. Part 3 concerns health care insurance, and how to pay for health care. The social and economic consequences of delaying a political decision concerning reform of the health care system in Poland is discussed. The role of government in providing and financing long-term care in some OECD member states is outlined; a voucher approach is suggested. Part 4 deals with issues on the effects of longevity and ageing on public health expenditure and costs of institutionalised care. (RH).
