Annotation | Registered small homes are regarded as homely, domestic settings; but they are seen by their proprietors as businesses. This pilot research was as much to explore the methodology, as to learn about the important issues which might form the basis of a larger study of small homes. The report comments on the application of regulations in Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire, and on general observations from a postal survey of small homes (20 completed out of 44 forms), regarding duration of the business, premises, staffing, and residents. Six homes - where proprietors, some residents, and staff agreed to be interviewed - formed the basis of case studies, which examined: the physical environment (extent of shared space, privacy issues); the social environment as regards interaction between residents and staff, and interaction with families, the community, social services, and health services; and the home as a business, the financial implications and staffing. Appendices include the survey questionnaire and questions asked for the detailed interviews. (RH). |
