AnnotationThe aim of the research reported in this paper was to identify the variables important in explaining the use of technical aids by older people, using the conceptual framework developed by Andersen and Newman. Data was collected from 498 randomly selected older people who were single, aged 75 years or older, and living independently. Findings showed that use of mobility aids and aids for activities of daily living (ADLs) was mainly predicted by need (functional status, chronic illnesses) and predisposing (gender, housing) variables. The number of used technical aids may be explained by predisposing (age, housing, education), enabling (income, receiving help), and need variables. In contrast to other studies, this study found that older people with a high income were less likely to use many mobility aids than people with an average income. (AKM).
