Annotation | The demographic equilibrium in the second half of the 20th century, with the remarkable increase in longevity, has created a new category in the population of the old and very old. For many, they do not age in their own homes but in "collective structures". This philosophical article attempts to look at what solutions were applied in the past, as to the collective responsibility for looking after the elderly members of society. It broadly considers historical developments from the 15th century onwards; and how this inheritance influences current day thinking about old age. (KJ). |
