Annotation | The extent of substance abuse in older people in the US is estimated by reporting data from recent studies, and screening and diagnosis methods are examined. Problem areas acting as stressors in older people, such as unstructured time, loneliness, losses in the areas of family, friends, economics and health are identified and discussed. Also studied are medications and misuse potential by older persons. Traditional beliefs of older people are identified and discussed. The final sections of the article include treatment for substance abuse and counselling older substance abusers. (AKM). |
