AnnotationDespite the rapid growth of the elderly population expected in the near future, few discussions have focused on preparing American society to deal with the changing demographic structure. Given that older people are living longer and healthier lives, and thus are capable of being more productive and less dependent, social workers need to promote economically productive roles among older people. This article reviews the common misconceptions and negative stereotypes about older people that have hampered their active participation in economic and social arenas. The authors propose a social work intervention model geared to promoting positive images of ageing to all age groups, and to helping people age productively. They recommend that the model be incorporated into social work education, to prepare social workers for the challenges and opportunities of the rapidly ageing population. (RH).
