Annotation | The introduction comments briefly on Folstein, Folstein and McHugh's original article and the Mini-Mental State's (MMS or MMSE) validity and reliability in separating diagnostic groups of dementia, depression with cognitive impairment, and depression. Drawing from a variety of more recent publications, Carol Brayne presents a synopsis on MMSE, exploring its applications in clinical and community settings. Literature relating to MMSE's contents and variations, the relationship to current diagnostic criteria, and approaches to analysis of MMSE is summarised. Whatever reservations have been expressed, she considers that MMSE has been unexpectedly successful, and expects the Folstein paper will continue to be heavily quoted. Marshal Folstein, an author of the 1975 paper, gives a reminder that MMS was designed as a practical clinical assessment of change in cognitive impairment in geriatric in-patients. The MMS score is not a diagnosis, merely a dimension of cognitive impairment. Folstein also points out limitations of sensitivity and specificity: research is required to compare tests for these attributes and for reliability. (RH). |
