AnnotationThis paper describes a nursing assistant training programme in basic behaviour management skills and a formal management system to encourage the application of these basic skills in a nursing home in Alabama, US. Behavioural skills training consisted of a 5-hour in-service followed by three weeks on-the-job training to ensure accurate application of behaviour management skills. Following the training, a staff management system was used to facilitate long-term use if the skills. Components of the staff management system included supervisory monitoring of the nursing assistants by licensed practical nurses, nursing assistant self-monitoring, verbal and written performance feedback, and incentives.
