AnnotationThe question whether or not rural older people are disadvantaged with regard to health care services remains unanswered, partly due to conflicting reports on differences in health service use by rural and urban older people. Using data from the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey, this US study aimed to identify differences in hospital days, home health visits and physician office visits across five geographical categories. After controlling for individual characteristics and availability of health care providers, the study found significant differences in service use. Results revealed greater use of home health care and less use of physician office visits and hospital care in rural areas. Because service use exhibits patterns of substitution and complementarity, the authors suggest that future research on the use of health services need to move beyond modelling the use of single services to modelling the range of services used.
