AnnotationA questionnaire survey of the children of 74 consecutive patients referred with dementia and living on their own, to a district general hospital psychogeriatric department, was conducted to investigate their awareness with regard to managing their parents' financial affairs. All 74 interviewees believed that older people needed assistance with managing their finances, but only 38 (51.4%) had taken any steps to help their parents. In general, they were poorly informed as to the legal status of their parents' financial position, although they felt that they required assistance and would welcome the help of interested professionals. Much needs to be done to raise people's awareness of the problem, as neglecting the issues involved are to the detriment of both patients and their families. (RH).
