AnnotationThis report is the second in a series of publications by the Employers Forum on Age (EFA), in which advice and guidance is presented on a range of issues concerning the relationship between `Age, employment and business'. The guidance contained was assembled at workshops held in March 1997 at the London and Leeds offices of Sanders and Sidney. Early retirement and voluntary redundancy schemes - based largely on age - have led to organisations experiencing enormous losses of both skill and experience. Employers consulted for this report gave a clear message, that 'downsizing' is an outdated, blunt instrument that should be consigned to the scrap-heap; the report avoids using it. Checklists are offered to help managers: clarify their reasons for seeking workforce reductions; examine the alternatives to redundancy; identify selection criteria other than age; understand all the costs involved; plan and implement workforce reduction as smoothly as possible; understand employers' legal requirements; and communicate effectively. In this way, management will be able take control of decisions about the size, balance and age profile of the workforce. (RH).
