| Annotation | This book has been co-published simultaneously as Loss, Grief & Care, vol 8, nos 1/2, 1998. It is arranged in four parts, comprising some thirty separate articles, and will interest those wishing to find out more about what experience of a stroke means: stroke survivors, caregivers, friends and family, as well as those who are involved professionally. Part 1 examines clinical perspectives of stroke: pathophysiology, psychiatry, rehabilitation, psychological studies, stroke as chronic illness, the incidence of depression, and the effect on quality of life as regards intimacy and sexuality. Part 2 comprises professional contributions: nursing care, rehabilitation nursing, a speech/language pathologist, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and social workers. Other papers discuss aphasia, dysphagia (swallowing disorders), therapeutic recreation, and the nature of suffering. Part 3 presents personal reflections from survivors of stroke, and how they cope with aphasia and language loss, and travelling.
