AnnotationThe problems of ageing are likely to affect women more than men, given their tendency to outlive helping networks of family and friends. This book is based on a research study examining the benefits and drawbacks of formal organisations' efforts to build social networks for older women. The study involved a two-tier investigation: a general review of model self-help support programmes for older women in the US; and an in-depth study of SOWN (the Supportive Older Women's Network, Philadelphia, PA), a model programme offering leadership training, networks, community outreach, and education for older women. The book also examines: the characteristics of older women and peer facilitators in self-help groups; the organisation of self-help programmes; patterns of participation and personal process of group self-help; the impact of self-help groups; and recommendations for promoting the effectiveness of self-help support groups. The author's aim is to provide practical information for those working to empower older women, and to improve the quality of their lives. (RH).
