Annotation | This commentary notes the value (and some limits) of P S Fry's article in this issue of the Counseling Psychologist. Sara Honn Qualls explores three themes, for which she also suggests further sources: the older population is very heterogeneous; coping strategies are domain specific; and successful ageing requires a match between the person and the environment. She concludes that although social theories of successful ageing are important, they are a small portion of what counsellors need to know in order to work with older people. She recommends texts on adult development and ageing, and assessment and treatment of mental health problems. (RH). |
