Annotation | With improvements in medical services and healthier environments, mentally handicapped people are living longer today than their counterparts in previous generations. Research, however, has indicated that mentally handicapped people are almost twice as likely as the general population to develop severe mental illness. This tendency, paired with the psychological and physiological changes accompanying ageing, creates challenges for accurate psychological assessment and effective therapeutic interventions for the older mentally handicapped person. A description of the older population with mental handicaps, mental health concerns, and successful assessment and therapeutic interventions is discussed. (RH). |
