Annotation | Surveys of geriatric care training programmes in the US indicate an imbalance in the funding available for preparing professional service providers in seven disciplines: geriatric medicine, nursing, psychology, social work, geriatric dentistry, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. The numbers of geriatric specialty trainees and proportion of minority group members, sources of trainee support, proportion of faculty specialists, academic interest, priorities and plans for funding geriatric care training courses varied across disciplines. Results suggest that all funding resources must develop more effective strategies, if they are to achieve an adequate and well-trained geriatric workforce which includes specialists from all of the relevant health and mental health professions.
