AnnotationThe development of empathy is an important aspect of the relationship between doctors and older patients. Teaching medical students how to develop empathic relationships with older patients requires three integrated steps discussed in this article. First, medical students must understand the psychological phenomena between doctor and aged patient, such as countertransference, transference, rapport, and resistance. Second, the student must work through his of her attitudinal barriers. Third, students must develop communication skills with aged patients that incorporate verbal and non-verbal communication, and how to compensate for patients with communication problems. (RH).
