AnnotationGuided by the assumption that the preferences for a particular type of living arrangement are influenced by values of privacy and the levels of needs and resources among older people, this study investigated how the socio-economic and demographic characteristics of Korean older people are associated with their preferences for independent living over co-residence with their children. A logit model analysis was conducted based on data from the 1994 Survey on the Living Status of Korean Elderly. The major findings were: contrary to common belief, rural older people were more likely to prefer independent living that urban older people; provided that older parents have financial resources, those in poor health were more likely than those in fair health to prefer separate residence from their children; and the absence of a son increased the likelihood of preferring independent living over co-residence. The implications of these findings for current Korean policy promoting co-residence and for studies of living arrangements of older people are discussed. (AKM).
