AnnotationThe population of Hispanic older people in the United States (US) is expected to increase over the next decades. This cross-sectional, qualitative study aimed to examine the views of a sample of 10 older Mexican-Americans on residential preferences should they become unable to remain in their own homes, and preferences in relation to formal and informal care. Themes arising from semi-structured interviews included the following: nursing homes as places of last resort; the desire not to be a burden to children; intergenerational differences in lifestyle; and extended family involvement in care and support. Implications of the findings for professionals are discussed, and recommendations for further research are included. (AKM).
