AnnotationThe aim of this study was to examine factors that contribute to self-perceived health status among a sample of 213 Chinese older people who visited the geriatric outpatient clinic of Beijing Hospital. The study hypothesised that cultural factors, specified by family relations, along with demographic factors, number of diseases, economic well-being, and living conditions would have a significant impact on subjects' self-perceived health status. Findings indicated that age, number of diseases, perceived family respect, neighbourhood relations, and percentage of income spent on rent were significant predictors of self-perceived physical health. The same factors together with preference to live with a son and personal monthly income were significant predictors of self-perceived mental health. The article concludes with an examination of the sociocultural implications of these findings. (AKM).
