AnnotationResearch has shown that health care and social service practitioners often lack specific information about alcohol use and abuse by older adults, and they have negative attitudes about working with this clientele. This article reviews the literature on alcohol and older people. It describes a course designed to deal with practitioners' need for basic, brief training about alcohol problems and older people. The training course, intended to improve practitioners' attitudes, knowledge and competencies, was carried out in ten workshops in Canada. Evaluation procedures indicated the course's effectiveness. Information from the workshop was used in subsequent work with older people with alcohol problems. (RH).
