Annotation | The Pennell Report takes up a challenge laid down by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948, and explores how women aged 45 to over 105 can enjoy physical, mental and social well-being. The report aims to influence existing policies and stimulate new ones that will improve the lives of women at the menopause and after. The report describes the Initiative's purpose, process and philosophy; and the features of the lives of 'Pennell Women'. It considers the social context of women's health; physical health, illness and disease; and mental health. On this basis, the report calls for a holistic approach to health for women aged over 45, to enable them to live a happy and healthy old age. Each chapter includes the views gathered from expert `Listening Panels', on topics identified by a National Steering Group, followed by analysis of existing research. With the publication of this report, the Initiative seeks the views of organisations and professions involved in women's health. It also aims to make older women more visible; and to break down the myths and stereotypes which have had an adverse effect on the quality of women's health and health services for women aged 45 and over.
