Annotation | Healthy living centres (HLCs) are part of the Government's public health strategy, complementary to `Our healthier nation' and the achievement of local health targets. The seminar brought together people leading the way in this approach to health. Papers on four examples of putting the principles into practice were presented: a community perspective - the Eldonians, Liverpool; health and local authority collaboration in the Wirral; the West End Health Resource Centre, Tyne and Wear, from a manager's perspective; and the Bromley By Bow Centre, a voluntary sector project in London's Docklands. Six workshops discussed the following themes: community involvement; partnership; sustainability; monitoring and evaluation; networking; and promoting health. The seminar concluded with discussion on some key points: funding; involving other policy areas; ensuring community involvement, and the channeling of support and resources to developing local people's skills; developing networks to share information; recognising and reviving the role of local statutory authorities; and ensuring other government departments are involved. The letter accompanying this report includes quotations from the seminar. (RH). |
