AnnotationThe challenge of this paper is to re-examine the demographics underlying the re-writing of social policy in an ageing Canada, as related to gender, family and generation. The paper gives a brief overview of Canada's changes and challenges in comparison to those in the US and selected European countries. The analytical construct, "life cycles of dependencies and responsibilities" is introduced. This is used to examine shifting bases of security among generations, with a focus on six birth cohorts: those born pre-1926 (1916-1926); those born in the depression years (1926-1935); pre-baby boom (1935-1946); baby boom, 1st wave (1946-1955); baby boom, 2nd wave (1956-1965); and post baby boom ((1965-1975). In particular, the article examines implications of possible changes to social policy for older people on women, the poor and other disadvantaged older people. (RH).
