Annotation | There is a growing interest in exploring the role of assistive devices as life-enhancing and cost-effective self-care strategies for older people with functional limitations, yet little is known about older people's concerns, perceptions, and beliefs about such devices. This US study used a structured, qualitative approach to describe assistive device perceptions of 103 stroke patients in rehabilitation. Six dimensions of patient concerns were identified, including the operation and utility of devices, social contexts and consequences, and attributions of cultural meanings of use. Initial use of the devices posed cultural value dilemmas and conflicting normative expectations. Implications of the findings for clinical practice and research are discussed. (AKM). |
