Annotation | Few studies have specifically examined older men and elder abuse. This article explores situations that lead to the actual abuse of older men, and the fear of abuse and mistreatment which can affect the quality of their lives. It discusses the high rates of self-abuse by older men and their high risk for abuse when they are lonely, living in inner cities, in prison, or gay. Since most men live with a spouse or a partner, they have also been victims of domestic violence. It is suspected that institutionalised older men live in settings that are incongruent with their self-concepts and preferences. The article concludes with a discussion about the special vulnerability of men from culturally diverse backgrounds to elder abuse, resulting from male-dominated socialisation and intergenerational conflict.
