Annotation | Age Concern England (ACE) would wish to see any proposed transport strategy give much higher priority to pedestrians and public transport users. It welcomes the underlying proposition that future transport policy will give less priority to car users than in the past. The Government needs to take into account that older people will increasingly make up a greater proportion of the population. Whilst this will mean an increase in the number of older drivers, accessible and affordable public transport will remain an important issue for older people. The question raised in the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) consultation regarding ensuring a high standard of safety across all modes of transport is also considered in ACE's response.
