AnnotationIn South Africa, the majority of older people live in multi-generational households, and it is therefore conceivable that over one million co-residents are faced with caring responsibilities. However, there is a paucity of research on South African informal caregivers and their experiences. This article reports on an exploratory study of the experiences of a group of 18 black informal caregivers in Mangaung (Bloemfontein), a black African urban township. Negative aspects of caring identified by carers included social isolation, family conflict, work-related problems, and stress. The main positive aspects to emerge were the feelings of pride and fulfilment. The article concludes with suggestions for improving the lives of carers, including information, home help services, support networks, self-help groups, and policy recognition. (AKM).
