Exploring quality in residential care for elderly people | Author(s) | Justine Schneider, Anthony Mann, Bob Blizard |
Journal title | Care: the Journal of Practice and Development, vol 6, no 1, July 1997 |
Pages | pp 7-20 |
Annotation | Quality of care is difficult to judge having both subjective and objective dimensions. This study described here tested a number of measures of quality of care in 17 residential homes nationwide. Depression in residents was taken as one outcome measure. This article describes the 309 residents in the sample, the medication prescribed for them and their health and psychological well-being. It reviews findings on documentation, the social environment, visitors' opinions, staffing issues and costs of residential care. Some homes performed consistently better than others; with residents' depression level found to be related to the physical care they received. (KJ). |
