Annotation | Although it is generally believed that Africa does not yet have an "ageing problem", population figures from the United Nations (UN) suggest that the transition from "young" age to "old" age is already in motion, and that it will pick up speed by 2010. This paper looks at Africa's older population, concentrating on their number, proportion to total population, rate of change, and their age and sex composition. An examination of the regional distribution of older people shows that Northern and Southern Africa are ageing much faster than other regions. (RH). |
