Annotation | The middle class is defined as that group in a democratic society which has systematically invested in a state-funded or private pension scheme. An attempt is made to define the socio-economic and political implications in the relationship between ageing and the growing uncertainty and exclusion of older people in Europe. The author wonders why old age is of particular concern for the middle class. Retired workers or older people should be allowed to choose the role in society best suited to their needs and aspirations - to include continuing in paid work, or offering services for voluntary work.
