AnnotationMemory for the temporal order of term of office of seven past United States (US) presidents was examined in older people with dementia of the Alzheimer type (DAT) and in healthy older people, in order to examine the effect of DAT on temporal memory for remote events. Among those individuals who recognised all seven presidents, bow-shaped serial-position affects for temporal order similar to those seen in studies of short-term memory were observed for both the healthy group and the dementia group. Accuracy of temporal ordering decreased with increasing dementia severity. The study concluded that DAT affects one aspect of `old' memory (i.e., temporal information) even in the very early stages of the disease. Theoretical models of serial-position effects need to address remote memory as well as short-term memory. (AKM).
