AnnotationBefore 1900 older people in the United States (US) derived their income from work, their children or charity. However, the new industrialised economy weakened family links and traditional skills, rendering workers more economically vulnerable. At this time, the institution of the private pension was created by employers who, in return for employees' long-term loyalty, promised to help sustain them through older age. This book explores the origins and development of US pension system, and looks at how today's modern economy is confronting the challenges of an ageing population. (AKM).
