AnnotationThe author demonstrates that working with older people can be made more exciting and stimulating by using storymaking as a creative basis for groupwork. Stories perform many functions in creative groupwork with older people: active physical expression; engaging attention; raising the energy and interest level in the group; and allowing alternative roles and relationships to be played out. The first two chapters outline the reasons for groupwork, and general points on running story sessions. The remaining four chapters explore specific themes, in which traditional stories - myths, wonder tales, folk tales, and fairy stories from many cultures worldwide - are introduced. Empowerment and consolation are the themes focused on in: stories containing a central elderly figure; loss in the lives of older people; loss of home and possessions; and marriage and the joy of union.
