Annotation | The author explains what is meant by life expectancy, and why it is important to know life expectancies at different ages to fully understand their meaning and potential. The main data source used is the `Statistical abstract of the United States', which has been published by the US Bureau of Census since 1878. The book is divided into five parts. Part 1 shows life expectancies at various ages: it is important to note that life expectancy is an average. Part 2 shows the leading causes of death for each decade and for specific other years from 1900 to 1993. Comparative changes in selected groupings of the leading causes are shown. The concept of age adjusted death rates is also explained. Part 3, on cardiovascular diseases, uses age-adjusted death rates to demonstrate the dramatic reduction in deaths caused by heart disease since the 1960s. Part 4 shows how death rates due to cancer rose steadily during the century, but that nearly all cancers in both men and women have remained nearly stable or declined sharply since the 1930s except for lung cancer. Part 5, on the future, show the present major killers by different age groups and forecasts their future impacts. (RH). |
