AnnotationMany types of psychotherapy have been shown to work effectively with older people, yet pharmacological and behavioural treatment are the most common types of interventions used with older people. In this US study, adults aged 60 years and older were presented with written scenarios depicting a 75-year old woman with a behavioural problem. The client in the case varied by cognitive capacity, behaviour problem, and living arrangement (nursing home or family home). Participants rated six types of psychotherapy treatment with Kazdin's Treatment Evaluation Inventory: person-centred therapy, strategic family therapy, transactional analysis, play reading, group therapy, and purposeful activity. All treatments were considered acceptable by the participants, however, person-centred therapy was rated the most acceptable. The treatments were also rated as slightly more acceptable for cognitively intact case clients than for impaired ones. Treatment ratings also varied according to the case client's living situations.
