AnnotationSome psychometric properties of three aggression/agitation scales were examined on an acute assessment and admission psychogeriatric ward. The correlation between the Rating Scale for Aggressive Behaviour in the Elderly (RAGE), the Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory (CMAI), and the Brief Agitation Rating Scale (BARS) and their internal consistencies and test-retest and interrater reliabilities were tested. All three tests have high internal consistency; all three are highly inter-correlated and thus provide evidence of concurrent validity; and all three scales have good test-retest and interrater reliability. Although the study was performed on one acute psychogeriatric ward with a comparatively small number of subjects, the authors suggest that this was not a drawback: the ward population at the time typified levels of aggressive or agitated behaviour. It may therefore be useful to measure behaviour disturbance in different settings to further assess the validity of these scales. (RH).
