Annotation | With the development of pharmacological treatments for Alzheimer's disease (AD), there will be an increase in the numbers of patients requiring assessment for specialist services. The authors describe a pilot study evaluating the performance of a community psychiatric nurse (CPN) doing home assessments, using a semi-structured assessment instrument in diagnosing early dementia and differentiating dementia subtypes in referrals to the Leicester University Memory Clinic. It was possible for the CPN to adequately detect dementia; however, subtypes were not accurately differentiated - and treatments are dependent on being able to differentiate AD from other forms of dementia.
