AnnotationCANDID (Counselling and Diagnosis in Dementia) offers direct access, by telephone or e-mail, to specially trained nurse/counsellors who record the caller's query, provide emotional support and practical advice. Clinical details are held for patients registered with the service so that advice given can be tailored to the patient's specific need and routed via the general practitioner (GP) for action. Advice is reviewed by a consultant neurologist and a psychiatrist. This study was a retrospective review of all calls received by CANDID over a 2-year period. Of 1211 calls, 547 were `registered' calls relating to 241 individual patients; the remaining calls were `generic', with members of the public and health professionals seeking information or advice about the service. The service has become accepted and used by families of patients and members of the public; but healthcare professionals have used it less than anticipated. The value of this study is that this model of service may be applicable to rare diseases other than early onset dementia. (RH).
