Annotation | Despite the rise in popularity of the multidisciplinary team assessment approach, the traditional consultant home visit has remained popular with patients and general practitioners (GPs) alike. Available evidence supports multidisciplinary team assessments resulting in similar diagnostic accuracy. However it is unclear whether they can gain similar levels of GP and patient satisfaction; nor have there been randomised controlled trials for comparison. This editorial reviews studies with reference to: the critical issue of cost of service (including fees for visits requested by GPs); the domiciliary visit process; assessment of the home environment; the usefulness of home visits; and the likely role of new technology in the assessment process.
