AnnotationUnder the National Health Service (NHS) and Community Care Act 1990, social services departments (SSDs) are required to provide information about their services to enable consumers to make informed decisions. This article reports on a case study which examined whether the information needs of older people in relation to community care had been met by the information strategy developed by one SSD. Data was gathered through a postal survey of older people who had been referred to social services in the first quarter of 1994. The following issues were investigated: reasons for older people contacting the SSD; whether and why older people found it easy or difficult to obtain information about social services; how older people had found out and made contact with the SSD; and the information preferences of older people in terms of format and source. Findings revealed that older people's information need in relation to community care had not been addressed by the SSDs information strategy. The authors found that the strategy did not recognise older people as a heterogeneous group, was not aware of barriers to information for older people, and did not use effective method of information provision.
