AnnotationThe term `Hispanic' has been used in the United States (US) since 1968 to refer to people of Spanish descent. With the increase in the proportion of the population labelled Hispanic, a debate has developed over the homogeneity or heterogeneity of people in this group. This study investigated service use in a sample of 2,135 Hispanic older people. Factor analysis revealed a high degree of homogeneity in the patterns of formal service use among the four Hispanic groups in this study that follows three latent, but distinct, patterns of behaviour: the use of federal entitlement programmes, in-home services, and senior centre services. However, a high degree of heterogeneity in the level of service use was found. Overall, service use was systematically lower among `Other' Hispanic older people and systematically higher among Puerto Ricans, with more erratic use among Cuban Americans and Mexican Americans. Controlling for between-group differences in socio-demographic characteristics did little to reduce relatively systematic between-group differences in service use. (AKM).
